Alajeró

alajeroOn the Southern slope of the island, Alajeró is like a balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, from the beach of Playa Santiago to the 1487 metres high peak of Garajonay, the highest on the island. The municipality has two well defined areas. The one on the coast, Playa Santiago, with its port and fishing area and, the upper part, the village of Alajeró, with a beautiful wood of palm trees. In addition, there are other dispersed neighbourhoods, such as Antoncojo, Pastrana, Imada and Arguayoda. There are charming little villages worth a visit, especially on foot, where you have time to take in and savour the quiet beauty of the scenery.

Interesting cultural places are the Parrish of El Salvador del Mundo, with a very nice portico inside, and the chapel of San Lorenzo, next to the ravine of Erque. Turning to nature, the cliffs are very interesting from a geological point of view, so are the beaches of Santiago and Ereses, with their clear quiet waters and diversity of fish. Also, near Agalán, there is one of the rare specimens of drago to be found on the island. Alajeró has, too, some of the best natural monuments in La Gomera like the so called "Volcán de Caldera", the only volcanic cone on the island, which can be seen from the mountain San Isidro. We also recommend a visit to the Drago de Alajeró, the most interesting example of adult drago (millennial Canarian tree) in the island. It is also worth a visit to the neighbourhood of Agalán, where you can go up the picturesque stony path to the mirador. Do not miss a sea excursion to view the wild astonishing cliffs of Alajeró, declared Site of Scientific Interest. Neither can we leave aside the beauty of the beaches, with their calm crystal-clear water, a good example of which is Playa Santiago, the most important fishing port of the island.
