Vallehermoso
Vallehermoso is the biggest municipality on the island, with a coast line extending windward to leeward, and such dispersed neighbourhoods as Tamargada, Alojera, or La Dama. Therefore, it has a large variety of micro-climates and landscapes. In this municipality, the volcanic origin of the island is exemplified by the impressive silhouettes of Roque Cano, by Los Órganos - a spectacular basalt formation, which can only be seen from the sea-, and by the so called Fortaleza de Chipude, a plateau which used to be a refuge and a sacred place for the natives. The local economy is based on agriculture, especially vineyards, potatoes, and banana plantations. As rural tourism is now on the increase, many old abandoned houses are being restored. Tamargada, surrounded by a charming group of palm tress can also be seen in the area of Tazo, where collecting the "guarapo"- sap of the palm, and making palm honey are traditional activities.

In Vallehermoso there are many places worth a visit, such as Laguna Grande, in the centre of Garajonay National Park. Laguna Grande is a very important cross-road, from where many paths depart leading to different areas of the island. It is also an old favourite meeting point, where witchery and magic ceremonies used to take place. At the present time, there is a large recreational area with grills and wooden picnic tables.  Another interesting picnic place is the natural fountain Chorros de Epina, with its seven water pipes, where, according to the legend, it is possible to drink from all the water springs on the island. The unique Canarian vegetation is well represented in the botanic gardens of Vallehermoso and Argaga, worth a visit. For sunny days, the best option is the Maritime Park, as well as the black sandy beaches. However, walking along the many well-kept paths of this municipality is the healthiest and best way to discover the magical beauty of this region. Two very recommendable walks are Cruz de Tierno - Roque Cano - Vallehermoso and Epina - Tazo - Arguamul.
